About Mount Sumbing

Mount Sumbing (3,371 MASL) is a stratovolcano located in Central Java. Administratively, the Mount Sumbing area is linked to Magelang, Temanggung, and Wonosobo Regencies. It is one of the highest mountains in Central Java and part of a mountain landscape that faces Mount Sindoro on its northwest side. Mount Sumbing has a record of volcanic activity and a historical eruption reported in 1730.

Iconic Attractions

Rajawali Peak & the Sumbing Summit Complex

Mount Sumbing has several summit points known along its hiking routes, including Rajawali Peak, Buntu Peak, Selo Konten Peak, and Kekawah Peak. Rajawali Peak is known as the highest point of Mount Sumbing at an elevation of 3,371 MASL.

Crater & Segoro Banjaran

One of the distinctive features of Mount Sumbing is the crater area at its summit. Around the crater complex lies an open area known as Segoro Banjaran, which offers a different landscape: an open expanse surrounded by the walls and relief of the summit area.

Sea of Clouds & Central Java Mountain Panorama

From the summit area and several camp points, hikers can enjoy the panorama of Central Java's mountains, including Mount Sindoro, and may see a sea of clouds when weather conditions are favorable. The sunrise panorama is also one of the main attractions of climbing Sumbing.

Hiking Trails & Characteristics

  • Via Garung (Wonosobo): One of the most popular routes up Mount Sumbing. The trail is fairly demanding, climbing steadily toward the upper area. It also passes through villagers' plantation areas before entering an area with more open vegetation.
  • Via Bowongso (Wonosobo): Located in Bowongso Village, Kalikajar District, Wonosobo. The lower section is characterized by plantations and forest, becoming more open and rocky as it approaches the summit area. The upper section has savannah areas as well as sandy and rocky terrain before the summit.
  • Via Gajah Mungkur (Wonosobo): Another route in the Sumbing area with a relatively long hiking character. The trail passes through plantations and open areas before reaching increasingly steep terrain in the upper section.
  • Via Butuh – Kaliangkrik (Magelang): One of the best-known routes because it passes through Butuh Hamlet, popularly nicknamed “Nepal van Java”. The climb passes through settlements and plantations before entering an increasingly steep trail toward Post 3 and Post 4. From Post 4, the route to the summit area is dominated by soil mixed with sand and a fairly steep gradient.

Best Time to Climb

May – September (Dry Season Peak): This period is generally the preferred choice for hikers because of the better chance of drier trail conditions and weather that is more favorable for enjoying open panoramas.
