About Mount Lawu

Mount Lawu (3,265 MASL) is a mountain located on the border of Central Java and East Java, with slopes that administratively cover Karanganyar Regency, Ngawi Regency, and Magetan Regency. Its highest peak is Hargo Dumilah (3,265 masl). Mount Lawu is known not only for its natural panorama, but also for the strong elements of history and culture on its slopes, including the presence of Candi Cetho and Candi Sukuh.

Iconic Highlights

Hargo Dumilah Peak

Hargo Dumilah is the highest peak of Mount Lawu with an elevation of 3,265 masl. From the peak area, hikers can enjoy mountain panoramas and the landscape of Java when weather conditions are favorable.

Candi Cetho & Candi Sukuh

The slopes of Lawu feature several historical and cultural relics of Java, including Candi Cetho and Candi Sukuh. Candi Cetho also serves as the starting point for one of the popular Lawu hiking trails.

Hiking Trails & Characteristics

  • Via Cemoro Sewu (Magetan): One of the most popular Lawu trails. The trail has an uphill character with many stone formations/stairs, causing the elevation to increase significantly throughout the journey. This route also provides access towards the Hargo Dalem and Hargo Dumilah areas.
  • Via Cemoro Kandang (Karanganyar): An official route that is gentler and friendlier for hikers, though it features a longer and more winding path through lush forests.
  • Via Candi Cetho (Karanganyar): The longest and most challenging hiking trail, yet it offers a bonus of vast, aesthetic savannah views and the distinctive historical atmosphere of the Candi Cetho area as one of its unique appeals.

Best Time to Climb

May – September (Peak Dry Season): The best time due to clear weather, minimal fog, and a golden opportunity to see the perfect golden sunrise (note: night/morning temperatures can be extremely cold down to freezing point).
